Female Hormone Blood Test Results Explained
Your hormone results are back and you need clarity. Estrogen, progesterone, FSH, LH, AMH. Understand what your levels mean for fertility, periods, menopause,.
Female Hormones: Your Cycle Is a Feature, Not a Bug
Female hormone testing is uniquely tricky because your levels are supposed to change. They shift throughout your menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and through menopause. What looks "abnormal" on day 3 of your cycle might be perfectly normal on day 21. So if your doctor did not ask which cycle day your blood was drawn, that is already a red flag.
These tests help diagnose fertility issues, PCOS, menopause, thyroid-related hormone problems, and irregular periods. But they only make sense when interpreted with your cycle timing in mind.
Tests Included in Female Hormone Panels
- Estradiol (E2) - the main estrogen, fluctuates throughout your cycle, drops dramatically in menopause
- Progesterone - rises after ovulation, confirms whether you actually ovulated
- FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) - tells your ovaries to develop eggs, rises as you approach menopause
- LH (Luteinizing Hormone) - triggers ovulation, often elevated relative to FSH in PCOS
- AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) - reflects how many eggs you have left (ovarian reserve), does not change with your cycle
- SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin) - binds hormones and affects how much is available for your body to use
- Total and Free Testosterone - yes, women produce testosterone too, elevated levels can indicate PCOS
- Prolactin - high levels can stop ovulation and cause missed periods
- 17-OH Progesterone - screens for congenital adrenal hyperplasia
The PCOS Puzzle
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome affects up to 10% of women and is one of the most common reasons for hormone testing. The classic pattern is a high LH-to-FSH ratio, elevated testosterone, and sometimes elevated DHEA-S. But not every woman with PCOS has the same pattern, which is why a full panel matters more than any single number.
Fertility and Menopause
If you are trying to conceive, day 3 FSH and AMH give your doctor a sense of your ovarian reserve. A progesterone level drawn 7 days after ovulation confirms whether ovulation happened. If you are in your 40s with irregular periods, rising FSH and dropping estradiol confirm the transition to menopause.
When to Get Female Hormone Testing
